Our Experience at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

Upon pickup at Cancun airport by airport shuttle through the resort, we had a lengthy drive down through the Riviera Maya region heading a little past Playa Del Carmen. With traffic, construction, and a few other hotel drop offs, we got to our hotel Xcaret Mexico about 2 1/2 hours after landing.

A nice cold beverage upon check in, we were a bit surprised at the additional cost of an eco tax that is to be paid right away. Equivalent to about $30 US, we weren’t going to throw a tantrum. The open aired lobby was the site we were waiting for, with a boardwalk view all the way out to the ocean.

After visiting a family friendly Sandals resort the year before, we certainly approached Mexico with an open mind, knowing the service and amenities would likely by scaled down based on the price of the resort. We had booked a 6 day, 5 night reservation, just to get some wonderful sunshine being all too used to the Northern snow climate with cold and dark days. Included in our package price was airfare, roundtrip transportation, all fun inclusive including open bar, live music, regular culinary experiences for each meal. Things like tours, spa services including facial treatments, nautical experiences on the high seas and or trips to Casa De La Playa or Isla Mujeres were extra.

After check in, a friendly staff member guided us past the fitness center, other rooms and access areas where restrictions apply, on the way to our first floor family room. We paid a little more for a slightly upgraded room where there was a king bed, pullout bed, and couch that was also a bed.

The room was certainly adequate for our family of 4 guests. However we will say that the pull out couch tuning into a ‘bed’ was a lose stretch. Our son being 10 years old at the time and maybe 4, 10″ had to sleep at an angle so that his legs would not hang off the edge. This certainly wouldn’t work for a teenager.

Our room was equipped with a flat screen tv, and mini fridge stocked daily with water, pop and beer. It was located across from one of the many pools at hotel Xcaret Mexico. We will give you fair warning that every time we walked out of our building, we would have to go by one of the customer service centers. While they are certainly there to help you with anything you need in the fun inclusive resort, they are also there to sell you memberships to their loyalty program. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you are someone that wants to experience this all fun inclusive resort more than once, or partake in more of what Xcaret has to offer. Xcaret xailing, the muluk spa, embarcadero isla mujeres, or any of the other Xcaret properties in playa del carmen or the Riviera Maya. If you don’t like the sales tactics, just be honest with them up front and they will do their best not to pitch to you over and over.

One of my favorites things to do on this vacation, was just sitting on the patio ‘balcony’ (first floor remember) where I could relax with a cold drink, not have the sun directly in my face, and read to my hearts content when the others were relaxing in the room. The room was just the right size for 4 guests (two adults, two 10 year olds), included an adjustable air conditioning, free wifi, and just a short 10 min walk to the famous xcaret parks most vacationers go to during their stay. The hotel property was just large enough to make us feel this place is special, but small enough we did most of transportation by foot.

We got a great price for our vacation, however there were certainly things we noticed you don’t get when staying at Hotel Xcaret Mexico. Certain sections of the resort are for the upgraded membership and reservation experience. We knew this wasn’t for us as we LOVE trying different resorts and forms of travel. Without paying the extra membership to premium unlimited access, there are certain areas of grupo xcaret parks that are off limits. You just won’t get the same exclusive service you would if paying the upgraded membership reservation. We found that we didn’t need a private pool as the kids pool and other large pools were plenty big enough for us to enjoy.

Getting around the resort was a breeze. We enjoy walking as a family, and there is a shuttle service/golf cart tram that takes guests all over the hotel property. Towards the ocean side there is an adequate small beach area and natural rock formation. There is one main restaurant that sits right about the ocean inlet. Then the other restaurants are located on the exact opposite side of the resort where guests check in.

Xcaret Park

So not to confuse the hotel and park, they are right next to each other. In fact if you stay at Hotel Xcaret Mexico, you can walk to one of the entrances for theme parks impressive offering. This in turn allows you to avoid needing any round trip transportation and come and go as you please.

While some might call it pricey, a full day at Xcaret parks Riviera Maya might leave you breathless. So much to fit in if you opt for a 1 day pass. If you prefer not to rush through everything, we recommend a two + day pass. The highlights for this all fun inclusive park, are listed below:

  • water park surrounded by jungle and butterfly garden
  • theme park, snorkeling, and aviary
  • amusement park, coral reef aquarium, and rainforest trail
  • eco-archaeological park and sea turtle center orchid museum
  • jaguars, manatees, spider monkeys
  • equestrian shows, volcanic stone tubs, and the natural wonder of Spanish ‘centotes’

There are also multiple Xcaret parks in Mexico. It’s best to research each one to see which offers the exact itinerary you prefer.

We had a phenomenal time as a family and certainly recommend this hotel/resort to anyone looking for a slice of Riviera Maya for vacation. Whether traveling as a family or as a couple, this resort has something for you.

Xcaret Time?

Overall we would call this a sophisticated hotel with all the Mexican hospitality you would expect. You would not head here for a culinary collective of fine dining, but rather the impressive view of wildlife, Caribbean sea, and all fun inclusive concept of spending time together in a family friendly resort.

To get into relaxation mode, hotel Xcaret should be booked for a minimum stay of three nights, however if you plan on taking advantage of Xcaret parks, xunset party, or any tours along the Mexican Caribbean sea, we recommend a five to seven night stay. To find great deals or a promotion valid for a time frame that works, check directly with Xcaret hotels or Grupo Xcaret parks for the best rates.
